This is the text of the Commencement address by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, delivered on June 12, 20xx.

I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots. I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?

It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.

And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting。It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:

Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.

None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

My second story is about love and loss.

I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation — the Macintosh — a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.

我的第二個故事是關於好惡與得失。

I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me — I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.

I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I retuned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance. I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.

My third story is about death.

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

我的第三個故事與死亡有關。

17 歲那年,我讀到過這樣一段話,大意是:“如果把每一天都當作生命的最後一天,總有一天你會如願以償。”我記住了這句話,從那時起,33 年過去了,我每天早晨都對著鏡子自問: “假如今天是生命的最後一天,我還會去做今天要做的事嗎?”如果一連許多天我的回答都是“不”,我知道自己應該有所改變了。

Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

讓我能夠做出人生重大抉擇的最主要辦法是,記住生命隨時都有可能結束。因為幾乎所有的東西─所有對自身之外的希求、所有的尊嚴、所有對困窘和失敗的恐懼─在死亡來臨時都將不復存在,只剩下真正重要的東西。記住自己隨時都會死去,這是我所知道的防止患得患失的最好方法。你已經一無所有了,還有什麼理由不跟著自己的感覺走呢。

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn't even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor's code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you'd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.

大約一年前,我被診斷患了癌症。那天早上七點半,我做了一次掃描檢查,結果清楚地表明我的胰腺上長了一個瘤子,可那時我連胰腺是什麼還不知道呢!醫生告訴我説,幾乎可以確診這是一種無法治癒的惡性腫瘤,我最多還能活 3 到 6 個月。醫生建議我回去把一切都安排好,其實這是在暗示“準備後事”。也就是説,把今後十年要跟孩子們説的事情在這幾個月內囑咐完;也就是説,把一切都安排妥當,儘可能不給家人留麻煩;也就是説,去跟大家訣別。

I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I'm fine now.

This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope its the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

你們的時間都有限,所以不要按照別人的意願去活,這是浪費時間。不要囿於成見,那是在按照別人設想的結果而活。不要讓別人觀點的聒噪聲淹沒自己的心聲。最主要的是,要有跟著自己感覺和直覺走的勇氣。無論如何,感覺和直覺早就知道你到底想成為什麼樣的人,其他都是次要的。

When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.

Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself.

數載寒暑,幾度春秋。親愛的同學,我怎能忘記,當年你們懷揣夢想,來到湖南師大求學深造。得天下英才而教育之,那是所有教育工作者的企盼,有緣成為你們的校友、導師和校長,那是我的福分和莫大的榮幸!

我們不會忘記,圖書館的燈光映照過你沉思的身影;英語角的夜幕靜聽過你自信的聲音;體育場的綠茵灑下了你拼搏的汗水;藝術節的舞台演出過你靚麗的青春。

我們不會忘記,是你們用論文和思想登陸中外學術方陣;是你們用各級各類獎項推動學校進程;是你們讓眾多媒體敞開鏡頭;是你們將母校的影響傳遍千山萬水。

我們不會忘記,紅旗下黨徽前,你們莊嚴宣誓;志願服務活動中,你們爭先恐後;籌備70週年校慶時,你們夜以繼日;汶川地震後,你們慷慨捐贈。

一幅幅畫卷,一幕幕場景,彷彿就在昨天,是那麼的清晰,那麼的難忘,那麼的令人眷戀。親愛的同學,母校的建設發展同樣傾注了你們全部的追求和汗水,彙集了你們所有的智慧和心血。今天,我要再次大聲地表白:老師永遠愛你們,母校衷心感謝你們!

麓山常青,湘水長流。親愛的同學,母校記錄了你人生一段最為寶貴的時光,也見證了你曾經的甘苦與憂樂。

你是否還記得,課堂上,老師帶你們誦讀儒道詩書,探究宇宙奧微;實驗室裏,導師給你們釋疑解惑,指點迷津;樟樹園中,輔導員同你們促膝交談,置腹推心。

你是否還記得,嶽麓山上指點江山,橘子洲頭慷慨激情;嶽王亭前閒庭信步,木蘭路上縱論風雲;桃子湖畔竊竊私語,丹桂樹下海誓山盟。

你是否還記得,夜歸天馬時的行色匆匆,寢室卧談中的激烈爭論,週末舞會上的熱情奔放,校園排檔裏的相敬如賓……

這一切都將成為你們成長途中有益的磨練,都將成為你們人生中難得的財富和美好回憶。

別情依依,前路漫漫。親愛的同學,是什麼讓你淚眼汪汪,是什麼讓你一步三回頭、“哥要走了”的畢業簽名紅遍校園。此時此刻,我的心中寫滿牽掛,充滿期待。

我牽掛着你是否找到了合適的工作?今年的就業形勢依然嚴峻,或許你還漂着,但天無絕人之路,通向成功的路也有千萬條。無論燈紅酒綠的大都市,還是條件艱苦的基層和西部;無論是按部就班的機關和事業單位,還是波濤洶湧的商海,都能演繹精彩人生。

親愛的同學,我期待着你們理性就業,勇敢創業;我期待着你們體面地勞動,有尊嚴地生活。

我牽掛着你是否做好了步入社會的準備?社會可沒有學校那麼單純,前行的路上充滿挑戰,充滿競爭,甚至會遇到陷阱和荊棘,你必須學會勤奮、堅韌和創新。為人處世是一門必修課、大學問,值得一輩子去鑽研,你必須讀懂忠誠、善良和謙遜。

古人感歎:聚散苦匆匆,此恨無窮。確實,天底下沒有不散的筵席,但就母校之情、師生之誼而言,既然曾經擁有,必將天長地久!

大學畢業勵志演講稿:又是一年畢業時

轉眼間,又一批熟悉的面孔將帶着大學四年的回憶離開校園。四年時光匆匆,大一的青澀懵懂,大二的奮起拼搏,大三的勤學苦練似乎都還在眼前,還未好好享受,卻要輕輕揮手,告別哭過、笑過、鬧過的兄弟姐妹,告別迷惘過、奮鬥過的校園青春。

大學裏最值得驕傲的事情也許是堅持並實現了自己的夢想,也許是收穫了甜蜜的愛情,也許是結識到了知己。有無悔,也有遺憾。比賽的失力,考試的掛科,同學間的小摩擦等等,也在調劑着大學這碗五味雜陳的湯。當然,還會有不少感悟。新聞學院大四的鄒佼向記者暢談道:“我認為大一到大四都要堅持努力學習,勞逸結合,學和玩都不能少。 大一做到適應大學生活,學會獨立,多閲讀、多交朋友,打下良好基礎。 大二思考一下自己想做什麼,確定大體的方向,並做初步準備。大三可以根據之前所學去實踐一下,併為自己選擇的道路做最後的衝刺。在大四,一方面要淡定地等待努力的結果,另一方面可以去做自己以前沒時間做的事情。”這些感悟都為學弟學妹們提供了良好的借鑑,促進他們積極向上,創造一個多彩無悔的大學生活。

我始終相信,告別是為了下一次更好的相見。步入競爭激烈的社會,才真正的見識到擁擠的招聘大廳,或是切實地感受到考研的重重壓力,遇到了以前從未碰到的難題,拉開了另一個生活場景的帷幕。據瞭解,今年全國畢業生數量達到699萬人,被戲稱為“史上最難就業年”,競爭壓力可想而知。與此同時,在收入等嚴峻的實際問題驅使之下,眾多大學生竟相信花20萬就能進銀行、國企或事業單位等騙局,不僅打碎了“鐵飯碗”夢,也將自己推入更深的淵谷。這其中雖然有許多社會急待解決的問題,但仔細想想許多大學生的觀念更是亟須糾正,走後門、託關係的投機取巧心理是萬萬不可行的,既危害個人,又敗壞社會風氣。

要想出人頭地,大學畢業生不應該嫌棄職位的高低貴賤,三百六十行,行行出狀元,只要腳踏實地,做好手頭工作,多積累經驗,終有出頭日。

又到了要説再見的時候了,可是再見是為了再一次的相見。等到幾年、十幾年、幾十年之後,等到大家都接受了社會和生活的磨鍊,等到每個人都變得成熟優秀,等到各自都有了全新的生活,再次相見,微微一笑,大家仍然是朋友,仍然有擁抱的理由,因為友誼地久天長,因為青春值得我們去追憶。

畢業離歌漸響,還未離開,卻已開始懷念。青春終究是會逝去的,不必傷感,不必慌張,它將永刻在歲月裏,化成一股温暖的力量,讓前行的路因回憶而充滿無限陽光。
